Italy - Bologna,  Italy - Fiumicino,  Italy - Florence,  Italy - Rome

Our Italian summer of 2022

Or should I say, our HOT Italian summer?
So okay, you all know that we spent some time traveling around Italy this past summer, so I thought I would give you a bit of a run-through of where we started out, how we made up our travel plans, where we ended up, and finally how we got back home to Sweden again.

We found a cheap plane ticket from Stockholm to Bologna, where we had booked a hotel for the first two nights. We actually ended up staying an extra night, cuz two days were just simply not enough and we had no time limit to this trip as we had four weeks off of work for our summer vacation. We spent those days just wandering around the streets of the beautiful city at about 35 degrees. Yes, that was hot!

Jacob has always wanted to see Florence and since it was really close to Bologna, that’s where we headed off next. We booked a high-speed train that took us there in around 40 minutes, where we had booked a small Airbnb for a few nights. It was not any cooler in Florence, we peaked around 42 degrees, so thanks to the aircon in the loft, we would not have made it otherwise.

The next stop was Rome, a city that we visited nine years ago so I did not expect us to go back there during this trip but I have to say that I just loooved being back. We hopped on yet another train, and it took us around 2 hours if I remember correctly, to get from Florence to Rome. Traveling by train in Italy is super easy! We booked ourselves a small hotel and enjoyed the heat while seeing all of the sights again, and yes, it was a hotel with air-conditioning.

After quite a few days of city life during the heat wave, we were kind of looking for a place to cool down, and maybe have a few days of relaxation. All the walking had killed my feet so I obviously needed some non-walking days on a sunbed. So our next stop was Fiumicino where we planned for a couple of days of beachlife. Beachlife and pasta that is! For those of you who don’t know where Fiumicino is located, is right by the airport in Rome, so is super close. If you’re even in Rome and have a few days left on your itinerary, well then I strongly recommend that you have a layover in Fiumicino.

So we started in Stockholm, flew to Bologna, took a train to Florence, another train to Rome and went by car to Fiumicino and then we flew back to Stockholm again.

The one thing that we did learn though, was that we should have had a plane ticket home already booked. It sure was an adventure flying to Europe with only a few nights booked, and then figuring out where you are going ad hook. But trying to find a one way ticket during the super touristy summer season can be quite expencive. And by saying that I mean really super pricy!

Okay, I have said this before – if you think that I am too slow to update the blog, you can always check in on our Instagram stories of each city that we have visited. We always highlight our favorites, share our travel days and of course, we share all of the bloopers.
